Building a Foundation

August 26, 2011

Do you have children? Did you know that you’re homeschooling every day? Even though you may be sending your little ones to public or private school you still are teaching them at home. Through your words and your actions. They listen to your phone calls. They watch how you interact with your husband. And they mimic you. Watching your children act just like you can be extraordinarily humbling. And also a great reminder that every day we need to follow after Him who has called us.

And if you truly are educating your children at home align your focus with His word. You have so many wonderful opportunities to fill these little sponges with Godly wisdom. For us, we’ve chosen to school our children at home so that we can teach them how to live for God while living in a broken world. Something even the oldest of us struggle with daily. But we’re praying this will build a strong foundation under them for we know the days are coming when their faith will be tested.

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”   {Luke 6:46-49 ESV}

Sure, they will learn english, math, science, etc., but not one of those subjects comes anywhere close to the importance of learning how to honor, love, worship, serve, etc. No school can teach your child that. God has given that privilege to parents.

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. (Titus 2:1-8 ESV)

Whether you are teaching the three r’s to your children at home or not, make sure you are teaching them Christ when you are together. From when you wake to when you rest. Help create in them a foundation that will not be easily rocked. Do not rely on Sunday School teachers. God has supplied you with everything you need. This is your time. Help raise up this amazing army to fight for Him.

Listen Longingly

August 25, 2011

Television. Cell phones. Facebook. Children. Exhaustion. To-do lists. It goes on and on. How many distractions keep you from connecting with other people? And I mean really connecting. Be honest and think about how often you’ve been on the phone talking to a friend all the while surfing Facebook. When was the last time you looked into somebody else’s eyes and gave them you’re full attention?

It’s hard, I know. It’s almost like we’ve been trained to multitask our entire lives. Schools and jobs are so demanding. And who has ever really taken an honest to goodness vacation? We’re so worried we’re going to miss some big important news flash. So we’ve got our laptop on the table, our cell phone in our pocket and our minds constantly thinking of the next thing to do. But do yourself a favor and pause.

Take a deep breath.

Do you see that person across the room? Your spouse? Your child? Go talk to them, now. Invest 5, 10, 15 minutes, however long, and listen to them. Take note of that little voice in your head that keeps interrupting. You hear it. It’s telling you to check your email. Add cheese to your grocery list. Call your friend to tell her about this cool new item on Etsy. Turn that voice off. Right now it’s just you and that person. And chances are that person, whomever it may be, rarely gets heard.

I can only imagine what it must have been like when the woman who had touched the hem of Jesus’ garment felt.

As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” (Luke 8:42-48 ESV)

For twelve years she was an outcast. Considered unclean and unwelcome. Can’t you imagine how much this timid child of God felt when Jesus singled her out in front of the crowd? Scared at first, wondering if she had done something wrong. But now, here was Jesus proclaiming that her faith had healed her. Such a beautiful scene! She was accepted and loved as she was by her savior in front of everyone! Don’t you just want to run up and hug her!

Who do you know that could use a listening ear and listening eyes? Seek out that person in your life that needs to know that they matter. That they are not a lost cause. Let go of any pride you may be holding on to and go after that loved child of God. Show them the love of Christ and give them your full, one hundred percent, attention. Chances are the Lord can use you both in each others lives. You in their life and them in yours.

Irish Oatmeal

August 23, 2011

Just sharing a simple recipe with you. Away from the Froot Loops and Cheerios. A warm breakfast for those soon to be chilly mornings.

Prepare a pot of Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal. Once finished cooking {about a half an hour later} spoon servings into individual bowls. Add dried fruit {we used craisins}, walnut pieces and honey. Add a splash of milk.

We also prepared this for picky eaters using just oatmeal, peanut butter and raisins. Or cinnamon and sugar and raisins.

Enjoy time with your family around the breakfast table sharing His word with each other.

There’s More

August 22, 2011

If asked to choose what the one thing that consumes my mind more than anything else during the day I’d have to honestly answer….housework.

Oh my heart sinks at that thought. I know that I want to develop a deeper relationship with my creator, but the floor is covered in something sticky. Oh and look, somebody opened a box of diapers and threw them all over the living room. Why are there clothes lying up and down the hallway? Has anyone seen my keys? I can’t find my sunglasses….again.

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.(Romans 7:15 ESV)

There are so many well intentioned books and websites dedicated to helping us take care of our domains. To be the mothers God created us to be. But I can’t help but feel like those well intentions are driving me to be a Martha. Why all the focus on a practically-perfect-in-every-way house? Why is it we choose to find time for Bible reading in between chores? It should be the other way around! If we can run a load of laundry after reading Titus then great! Vacuum the cheerios up after the Noah’s ark activity with your toddler. Go through all the mail after you disciple your daughter who is dealing with peer pressure. We need to stop choosing the ways of this world. Pray for discipline in this area. I need reminded every single day, every single hour, that this life isn’t all there is. It’s so easy to be consumed with the here and now and with earthly beauty.

This is definitely more of a mental challenge that needs to be overcome. However we can take small steps on our journey to becoming a Mary. One way to help us in that direction is to have less to clean.

How much do we really need in our houses? Surely you’ve noticed that little ones would rather have one toy {or box} to play with than a whole room full of toys. Grab some bags and boxes and begin removing the things from your house that are keeping you away from basking in His glory. If the Lord were to ask you to give away everything you owned think of all the time you would have to spend with Him. You wouldn’t be bogged down with loads and loads of laundry and dishes. No more hair supplies and old make up to rummage through. There is something beautiful about ‘less is more’. Less of the world and more of Him. That should be our hearts desire.

So let me encourage you that there is more to this life than chores. As mothers we certainly have special tasks, but our focus should be guiding our families and ourselves closer to Him. Leave the crumbs at the table and seat yourselves at His feet. And please, the next time I visit do not pick up on my account, I’ll just know you’ve been busying working for the Lord. Joyful messy work!

Gentle and Quiet

Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
