Around the Campfire

September 10, 2011

The breeze of autumn is coming through. Can you feel it? Oranges and browns are taking over the greens. All of nature is drying and becoming a bit more crispier. It is our favorite time as a family to gather around the bonfire out back. To sit around sharing stories and telling jokes. Roasting hotdogs and melting marshmallows. Counting stars and seeing who can find the space station first. Examining our hearts and seeing how small we are and how great He is. As I’m writing this my heart is anxious with excitement for those upcoming memories to be made this very night.

I want to share with you how we made our firepit in our backyard so you, too, can enjoy family bonfires. It was one of those projects where at the end we asked each other,  “why didn’t we do this sooner?” The entire pit costs around $100. I will try my best to include all the instructions. I promise, it’s really not that difficult to do.

The items:

landscaping wall blocks {Make sure you ask at the store if a certain stone can take the heat of a firepit. The ones we chose can take the heat, but I guess some just start to crumble after a couple of fires as they can’t take the constant heating and cooling.}

gravel/stones {NOT river rocks}

sand

a strong hand willing to do all the work

First you’re going to want to get all your measurements. How big do you want your fire pit? Take those measurements and determine how many blocks you’ll need, how much sand and how many stones.

Fair warning, the blocks are very heavy and will make your car connect with the road. Be very careful.

Then dig a six to eight inch deep circle. Fill the hole in halfway with gravel and then with sand. We then topped it off with nice rocks. Do not use river rock as the heat from the fire will cause the stones to EXPLODE! You don’t want that happening while you’re making smores.

Next, start arranging your blocks. This part can get a bit tricky with spacing. We only went three levels up and that seems to be the best height for us.

And you’re done! Easily completed in an afternoon and you’re now ready to sit around with loved ones and enjoy a chilly evening together.

For much more thorough instructions check out this youtube video.

While outside encourage your children to admire the stars and talk about how amazing our creative God is. Ask them how many stars do they think there are? How far do the skies reach? How big is God? So many fun and thoughtful conversations to be had!

Magnify Your Weaknesses

September 8, 2011

Today I am asking that we all step away from the mirage of being perfect. We are not Martha Stewart. We are not Beth Moore. We are not Christy Nockels. You are you. Exactly who God wanted you to be. Not perfect. Full of scrapes, dents and scars. Full of mistakes and dreams. Only you can live the life that was meant to be lived through you. Why are women so set on being somebody they aren’t? Why are we not content with the gifts and talents that have so graciously been given us?

My dear sisters in Christ, stop it. Stop making it look like being a follower of Christ means having your hair a certain way and wearing these particular clothes and carrying this kind of handbag. A new believer is going to look at you and see a hill that can not be climbed. Or, heaven forbid, they may be fooled into believing that the way they look or how they keep their house will draw them closer to Christ. Humble yourselves! Show them how we are all broken.

On my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses—though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
{2 Corinthians 12:5-10 ESV}

There is only One who is perfect and He alone deserves all of the glory. We are not Christ. We are the Paul’s and David’s. The liars, the thieves, the murderers, the stutterers. He is made greater when He uses us, the weak but willing. Let’s boast in our weaknesses, Sisters. Let’s put these broken jars of clay on display for all to see. Allow Him to use your brokenness to bring others to Him.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
{2 Corinthians 4:7-10 ESV}

I know this was harsh my dear Sisters. I do love you all. So take the mask off and let everyone see the true you. You are beyond beautiful. Just the way He made you.

{I want to add that the above jar is now sitting permanently on my desk as a reminder that my children, my family, my friends are all jars of clay as well. I need to be reminded daily that He alone can provide me with the grace needed to extend to others.}

One for One

Have you heard of TOMS shoes? They are not the most attractive looking shoes {though much better than Crocs}. However, their appeal comes from the heart of the TOMS company. For every pair of shoes you buy one pair will be donated to a child in need.

This is not just talk. Go to their facebook page and see photo after photo after photo of children in need sporting their freshly donated TOMS. It is so beautiful.

I want to lay this out there. I am not a shopper. By any means. But knowing that because I’m buying a pair of shoes now a sweet young child will be saved from the diseases that come from walking barefoot, well, I was sold. And we’re already preparing to buy everyone in our family a pair of shoes on their birthdays.

And just so we’re clear. These are the most comfortable shoes! But, in all honesty, even if they weren’t I would still buy them. To even imagine what it must be like to walk miles and miles for water with no shoes, at all, every single day is heartbreaking.

The next time you’re in need of a new pair of shoes, or you just want to serve these sweet young souls, check out the TOMS website. There you will be able to see which stores near you are carrying TOMS. I was told that it’s sometimes best to buy a size smaller than you’d normally wear. I, personally, like wearing socks with mine so I just went with my normal shoe size. They are tight at first but they’re like ballet shoes in that respect. You want them to be a little snug because they will stretch. All you do is toss them in the washer to clean them. How simple is that? So go check them out already! TOMS

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

Godly Grief

September 7, 2011

This morning I woke up early to spend time with my Father. I go to our spare room and get down on my knees. I raise my eyes and see the clouds of tropical storm Lee racing by. How awesome.

“Thank you, Lord! How beautiful.”

And at that moment I was pierced to the heart.

My eyes were opened to how cruel I had been to my children. I don’t know about you but my beautiful daughters are often coming up to me and saying things like “thanks Mama! You make the best peanut butter and jelly!” or “Mom, you did such a good job with the dishes!” My children are crazy grateful. And you know what I usually do? Roll my eyes thinking they’re just trying to compete for my attention or something. How wrong, oh how wrong I’ve been! There is so much to learn from our little ones! I pray I too can have such a grateful heart. Instead of always assuming there are wrong motives behind someones affection. With a broken, repentive heart and tears washing down I began to read His word.

So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
{2 Corinthians 5:9 ESV}

Those storm clouds moved quickly. Their design and beauty delighted my heart. I showed my thanks. Do you think God rolled His eyes at me and said “darling, those are just some clouds. Get over it.” Or do you think it pleased Him to have a daughter that was thankful, even for the small things?

I continued to read on.

As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
{2 Corinthians 7:9 ESV}

I want you to know that I am an open door. There are very few things I will keep hidden. So that’s why I’m sharing this struggle with you. I am praying that if there is someone who also needs their eyes open that your heart will also break. Our children are just that. They are children. Beautiful and innocent. Not yet corrupted by the unforgiving ways of the world. Let them stay little. Encourage their hopes and dreams. Though they may seem immature and silly to us because we’ve been so hardened by life. Protect these young ones. Let others call you over protective. You are raising up an amazing army for the Lord. Don’t let the enemy into His camp. You fight your hardest and keep these little ones pure. Listen to what they have to say and always, always, always encourage.

Pom Pom Wreath

September 5, 2011

The good Lord, our creator, created us to create! To create beautiful art that will glorify Him! He supplies us with so much to release our inner artist. Why we try to stamp out our desire to create as we get older is beyond me. Sometimes we think art is meant only within the four walls of an elementary school classroom. Sisters, let me tell you, it’s meant for every day of your life. Live your life colorful!

As we’re coming into the anxiously anticipated autumn season I wanted to share a little craft with you, a pom-pom wreath. It really is so incredibly simple. I just might put my older girls in charge of it this year. It does take a long time but it can easily be done while watching tv or, my favorite, listening to a sermon!

I first got this idea from a fellow blogger, Stefani. Such a fun, simple and inexpensive wreath. I’m sorry, but I refuse to spend $70 on a wreath for my front door that is going to battle the harsh outdoor elements. No, $10 spent at Michael’s craft store is much more reasonable.

Pick out your favorite colors of yarn. I chose the color theme of our decor. And begin wrapping a color around your hand. I believe these particular pom-poms were wrapped around 75 times? Here is a great tutorial on how to make pom-poms. I wanted mine big so I wrapped around all four fingers. The wreath you see below ended up with 48 pom-poms.

I simply took a piece of yarn that was the same color as the pom-pom and tied each one on. You can see a pattern was used here but it would be equally as beautiful with no pattern at all! It’s your wreath and your choice.

I hope you find some time this autumn to create one. And if not you, have your kids have a go at it. Simply even making one for their bedroom door. Allow them to express their creative little selves. Have fun and be patient. It takes a bit of time but it makes a lasting impression!

Blessings!
