Some people get excited about Disney World. I do. But even more so I get psyched about the Teach Them Diligently Convention! It’s a gathering of hundreds of friends that you’ve never met! The speakers are all inspiring and have changed the way I homeschool. I’ve done a complete 180 since the convention this past March 2012. And the people I’ve met have become lifelong friends. It’s like this encouragement to continue living in the world but not of the world.

Today we received an email with the locations of the TTDC 2013. Three locations next year!

I hope you prayerfully considering attending next year. Plenty of time to plan! We went for one day this past spring, due to circumstances beyond our control, but we are definitely looking forward to spending three wonderful days with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ!

Hope to see you there!

Blessings!

Favorite Kitchen Items

June 5, 2012

This post has been dancing in my head for the past year. Something I definitely want to pass on to my children. When we were first married we started out with very little. I remember my favorite item in the kitchen at the time was a Hamilton Beach mixer we had gotten as a wedding gift. We’ve been married for 12 years and I recently passed it on to a friend because it was still working great but as our family grew we needed a larger mixer. But we’ve slowly attained kitchen items that, yes, cost more money than we were handing over to Walmart every time something broke. We finally decided that if we’re going to buy it then it has to do two things.

1. Handle a large family’s needs.

2. Last a long time.

So here is a list of our favorite kitchen items that, had we had the money to begin with, we would have gotten when we were first married. All are strong, sturdy and incredibly durable. {click on photos for links to products}

1. Food Processor

We finally bought a food processor. We had been married 11 1/2 years when we finally caved to the high cost and got one. And we don’t regret it one bit. When we were first married we had one that held like…a cup and a half? It was tiny. And thankfully that little thing broke, forcing us to upgrade to accommodate our family. This thing is a beast! Whether it’s slicing or pureeing, it’s just amazing and an enormous time saver.

2. Blender

We had blenders in the past but they were so cheap and cracked or stuff would spray out or it wouldn’t actually ‘blend’. Like the food processor, this thing is also a beast! I know people drop incredible amounts of money on vitamix blenders but there really is no need to pay that much. This particular blender has been used daily in our house. For sauces, smoothies, etc.

3. Microplane Zester

We had a zester but it was more like a kinda tiny holed grater. It took far too much effort to zest a lemon. When we bought this zestor we were shocked at how fast and easy we could add lemon zest to a recipe. And we zest a lot! I think Ina Garten has taught us that. It just adds so much taste to a dish.

4. Nut Milk Bag

This may seem like an odd item to have. I got it with the intention of making almond milk for my kids who are highly sensitive to dairy. Which, I still use to make almond milk because it tastes oh-so-good, but not nearly as often as I use it to squeeze citrus. It holds back the seeds and is incredibly easy to wash by hand.

5. Kitchen Aid Mixer

As I said in the beginning, we had a Hamilton Beach stand mixer that was amazing! It really was and I highly recommend it. We were just ready for something larger. So, like most, we set out and got a Kitchen Aid. We don’t have any fancy attachments. We use it quite often for making dough, making batters, etc. It’s one of the most used items in our kitchen.

6. Hand Blender

This may seem redundant. We have a food processor, we have a blender, why would we need a hand blender? For so many things! Mainly for pureeing things within their own bowls. For example, when I make butternut squash soup I can easily puree the chunks of soup in the pot while it’s still bloody hot. When we didn’t have one of these I would pour the hot soup into our cheap blender and inevitably burn myself in the process. Not anymore! There is something about the ease of use that is worth the extra money.

7. Fire Fighter Gloves

My husbands uncle is a retired fire fighter and gifted us these gloves. We use them to pull things out of the oven, to grill, but even better is when my husband uses them in our outdoor fire pit. I don’t have to worry about him burning himself. These are heavy duty gloves and we’ve had them for a long time and they don’t look anywhere near needing to be replaced.

8. OXO Knife

I’m not big on spending lots on knives. Especially after the time we dropped a good amount of money on professional knives only for them to be some of the worst that we had ever used. However, this little knife {we have two} is used multiple times each day. It’s small yet tough enough to be used on anything from cutting grapes for toddlers to cutting chicken or steak.

9. Keurig

It seems everybody has one nowadays. I’m not a big coffee drinker but the husband is. Thankfully there are also k-cups for hot cocoa and tea! This is a no brainer. You like coffee but no one in your household does? This saves you from having to make an entire pot for one person. And really, one person should not be able to drink an entire pot on their own.

10. Flour Duster

This is, hands down, my most favorite item. We’ve had this for many years. My husbands grandmother gave it to me as a Christmas gift. At first I had no idea what it was. When we realized you can use it to dust surfaces with flour or powdered sugar…oh it has been used many, many, many countless times. A gift I certainly plan on passing on to each of my children. It’s a shame most stores don’t carry them. If you ever do find one, pick it up!

11. Milk Frother

This product is not necessarily a must-have but my husband absolutely loves it. It has saved us tons from not going to coffee shops. And the best part? It’s at Ikea and only $2.99! We keep a bunch in our pantry to give away as gifts. And did I mention my husband makes a mean white mocha? Drool worthy.

12. Juicer

Again, not a must-have but ours is used every week. Sometimes daily. The nutrition from fresh fruits and vegetables is unbeatable. There’s no corn syrup, no sugar, no additives, just fresh wonderful juice. Fresh juice can help with different ailments but that’s a whole other post.

13. Salad Chopper

I call these kitchen scissors, but to each his own. Unlike the last two items I consider this a must-have. Especially if you have toddlers and need to chop food up quickly and easily. Just today I cut up two cold pieces of grilled chicken quite easily for the kids. However, these can be dangerous so keep them up high and away for little ones. They do lock together but you know how clever tiny people are.

So that’s it. These are products that I want to remember to tell my children about when they begin their own families. I realize many of these cost a lot and there will be new/better models in 10-15 years but for now these have served our family very well. Especially a large family. We definitely get our money worth on each.

I didn’t write out the name of each product as I know some of them aren’t available anymore but I still linked to them so you will be able to find them on Amazon or wherever was appropriate {you know, in case you’re interested in checking them out}.

Of all these things I strongly encourage you to get the flour duster! Especially if you’re heavy into baking or pizza crust making.

Blessings!

Called to Deliver

June 3, 2012

I have been struggling the past few months. As you can tell this site has been left to the wayside. I couldn’t bring myself to blog. I felt gripped by the stronghold to please others. I would find advice on how to properly blog.

Tweet this.

Join this party.

Be consistant in how often you post.

Have a large following.

I couldn’t carry that pressure and be a mother of many and wife of one grace filled man. I was being stretched too thin by expectations. So I quit. If I couldn’t be there for everybody I was stopping and only choosing my family. Easy peasy. Drop the site.

But it wasn’t that easy. For the past month or so I have been lovingly encouraged by the Holy Spirit to get back to writing. I tried to brush it off. Every so often there would be another tug. Never a pressure, just a strong ‘you-should-be-doing-this’. Sermons at church. Words from friends. Words from complete strangers. Callers on the radio. Many random moments all came together and have brought me back. The last encouragement was through a sermon at church this morning. As a Christ follower I am called to be a deliverer of His message of reconciliation and hope to others. So are you if you follow Him. But like most things I thought the market was saturated enough. There are so many amazing and inspiring christian blogs out there, I would just be white noise. My story isn’t nearly as exciting as others. I’m simply a stay at home mom who wants to be humble enough to not stand out but to encourage others on their walk with Christ. However, if you’re a Christ follower you shouldn’t be able to blend in. Nothing about your life should be plain and especially not boring. And that’s when I realized He wasn’t my everything anymore. Life had gotten in the way. Being a wife, being a mother, being a friend, being a photographer, etc. all had garnered more of my attention. There were breaks where I would come running back to Him. But everything I did would slowly fade away. Or rather I would allow my time for Yahweh to fade away. Like when you want nothing more than to spend time with a loved one but they always seem busy with something else that is more enjoyable to them. I treated my God like a second rate idol. And I am here to apologize publicly to Him for not showing Him the respect, honor, love and devotion that He deserves.

The updates here won’t be consistent. I won’t be joining any blogging parties or twitter parties or anything like that to promote my name. All that will be lifted up here is His name. Oh there will be occasional recipes and such but that is because I am writing with the intent of also training up my children. I want to be able to share with them things we did as they were growing.

I want to ask you the same question that was posed to us during church today.

Who are the people you’re supposed to be a deliverer to? Are you standing up and giving His message or are you shrinking back and assuming somebody else will fill your place?

Yahweh created you for a purpose. To spread His name all over the earth. Whether that be through blogging, through co-workers, through playdates with other moms, through your local coffee shop pick up – anywhere. He can use you wherever you are, whenever and however He pleases. As long as we’re willing to listen to Him. If you feel the Holy Spirit tugging on your heart don’t brush it off. Follow with your whole heart so that your life is full of color among the grey.

Don’t.

Blend.

In.

Blessings!

We love big families. Love seems like such a lame word to use to describe our joy in being parents to a quiverfull. And yet I’ve noticed a terrible, terrible trend since becoming a mother of more than two.

Big families are treated like a burden on society. Let me make this clear – I don’t know one family that has four or more and is living off the government. Yet we are asked to support a woman’s choice to end life but nobody respects a large families choice to give life. The comments we receive can be harsh. And they’re said right in front of our children. Cruel words to heap upon a child’s listening ears.

Recently we’ve had the enormous blessing of reading Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham. We also went to the Teach Them Diligently homeschool convention. For the first time in our parental lives my husband and I felt normal. There were families all around that were just like us. No rude comments were made. There were children everywhere! And might I add – the most well behaved children. Yes there were occasional outbursts but the manners would have knocked you over.

Why is it so difficult for Americans to appreciate life? Why do we stop congratulating after child number three? Why do we think we have any say in what happens between a man, woman and God? I can not even begin to count the amount of women I’ve come across that, once they find out their pregnant with their third, fourth, fifth, sixth or more how completely terrified they are to tell their families. Namely parents or in laws. These poor women should be celebrating that God is blessing them and instead they try to hide this blessing from the inevitable persecution.

Here is a sermon I am praying you’ll listen to. Maybe you’re naive to all of this. Take a listen and learn about the struggles of rejection that large families deal with on a daily basis and how we need to change our mindsets.

Centrality of the Home

So maybe you’re single. Maybe you have one or two children. Maybe you have no idea what I’m talking about. Here is a list of comments my husband and I have either received or our friends have. You parents of big families, I imagine you will be nodding in agreement to all of these. I’m so sorry that you are. I hope peoples hearts will be more open to accepting our decision to follow God’s command. But even if they’re not I know that you, my loves, are gathering treasures in Heaven and obey our Father and not societies shaking head.

Blessings!

This past January I took part in the Daniel Fast for 21 days. I was opened up to so much spiritually. So when Lent came around I decided to go the full mile and set forth to do the Daniel Fast for 40 days. Let me tell you, that. was. hard. It was incredibly difficult to not grow jealous of my family for eating our favorite foods. I didn’t mind if I was out with friends but I think one of the hardest parts was holding the pizza boxes on my lap in the car for my family. But the scripture that continually ran through my head that looooong ride home was “Count it all joy my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds. For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have it’s full effect that you may be perfect and complete.” And you know what? I survived.

One morning I was stumbling through the kitchen looking for something to eat for breakfast. Anything in the fridge? Nope. Anything in the pantry? Nope. Oh, look, leftover pizza. *scoff*.

“Mom, is everything tasting bland to you?” says my oldest.

“Yeah, it’s just that I’ve been eating the same thing for almost 40 days, I’m kinda bored of it.”

And right then I felt like an Israelite. How selfish I was being! I had plenty to eat. No it wasn’t my favorite, but the Lord had provided food for me. Another lesson learned.

When passover came my family chose to hold a seder feast. We prepared lamb, potatoes, carrots, haroset, chocolate cake and help communion. It was beautiful! Better than any holiday I had ever celebrated! And you know what? I ate. And I ate happily not because of the food but because of why we were feasting. We taught our family about our heritage in slavery. We taught about the hope in Christ, our passover lamb. I enjoyed the meal because of the meaning, but I didn’t go crazy over the taste of the food. It was pleasant, but the next day came and I was back on the fast. And what I’ve learned through all of this is that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, sweeter than God’s grace. No amount of honey, no amount of lamb, no amount of chocolate can satisfy my craving for love and forgiveness like the touch of God on my life.

May I encourage you to feast on His word today? And every day. He will fill you up with living water!

Blessings!
