Let the Truth Be Told

Tim Tebow has been in the news a lot recently and rightfully so. Here is a video clip that was made during the Broncos vs Bears game last weekend. Tim agreed to be miked up for the whole game. Here is a sneak peek into what goes on during an NFL game through Tebows eyes.

I came away from watching this as convicted and highly inspired. You can tell he truly loves the game of football but above that he loves his Lord and the people around him. He spends more time encouraging those around him than thinking about what he can do to win the game. His goal is clearly hearts, not touchdowns.

Would I be as loving and encouraging? Am I as loving and encouraging? I’m afraid of what I might hear at the replaying of a day being miked up. I think groans would outweigh encouragement. Frustration would take lead over love. I didn’t know this but apparently miking up NFL players is a common practice. And the results aren’t pretty. Lots of editing typically goes into those. Lots of beeping out and cutting out. So at first I thought, “well, of course he spoke well, he knew he was miked.” But no, most other players don’t care. Even if they did care, the truth always comes out. They show who they really are.

Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.
(Luke 12:2-3 ESV)

And it’s the fear of the truth that drives me to double check my thoughts. Triple check. And how can I change this attitude of mine?

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
{James 1:19-25 ESV}

Stay in His word. Daily.

Every.

Single.

Day.

And yes, listen. If you can listen to a sermon while doing laundry – great. If you can listen to the Bible on cd while cooking dinner – great. And, of course, act on what you hear. Let it sink in. Let it change you from the inside out. And pray for that change. I know I will be. Praying for a heart like His. Praying that my actions, my words, won’t make me cringe at the end of the day. Or make my children cringe. Or make the Lord cringe.

My heart breaks even writing that. {thankful, thankful, thankful for grace that is beyond my understanding}

Tim Tebow is a great football player. There’s no doubt about that. But he is an amazing man of God above football. And should be considered a great inspiration to us all.

Blessings!

Help Portrait 2011

December 10, 2011

Today is the official Help Portrait day of 2011. Help Portrait is an organization of photographers who give back to those who are less fortunate. Are you a photographer? Give of your time to those who, maybe, have never even had there photo taken. We all know the gift of a photo. I moment saved in time. A memory made more permanent. If you asked somebody what they would would take from their house if they could only grab one thing, it would be their photos. You truly can not put a price on memories.

Head over to the Help Portrait website and see where you can volunteer. You don’t even need to sign up. If you feel lead to photograph somebody at no cost as a gift to them – just do it. No strings attached. Maybe a neighbor? A women’s shelter?

You don’t even need to be a photographer! Can you do make-up? Do you have a location you can offer up as a one day photography studio? Can you drive people to and from the make shift studio? This isn’t just for photographers, there is a place for everybody to serve. Bring snacks? Donate financially?

And remember, this isn’t about you. This is about serving others. Encourage somebody today and show them how beautiful they truly are.

Blessings!

Hard Eucharisteo

November 23, 2011

Be thankful for what has been given you.

And when I say be thankful, I mean for all of it. Even the hard parts. The moments when you’re screaming within “why me”! This is the hard eucharisteo. This is when you know it hurts but you also know that God can use your situation to bring glory to His name. Your struggles now may mean a saved life later. I’ve known so many believers that hide their struggles. They try to cover them up and put on this ‘christian’ face. Trying to convince others that their life is perfect because of God. And to that I ask “what Bible are you reading?” God is glorified when we rely on Him, not on ourselves. The Bible is full of prostitutes, murders, incest, liars, thieves, the poor, the diseased. And God is shown to be bigger than all those circumstances. If our lives were meant to look so glorious don’t you think those parts of the Bible would have been left out?! We need to boast in our weaknesses. To say ‘look at what I had’ or ‘what I went through’ and ‘He is still great’ and ‘He is still my everything’. He has a plan.

So maybe you didn’t have a drug addiction. Or you didn’t lose a child. Or you didn’t come from a broken home. Listen to others. Listen to the stories of the people around you. Open up your heart and listen to the story God is writing in their lives. It will give you pause to praise Him. To thank Him for all that He has given you. When you hear of a friend losing a job doesn’t that make you thankful for the income you have? When you donate clothes to Goodwill, does that not make you grateful that your children are warmly dressed?

Read books of missionaries in third world countries. Watch the news and witness what is taking place in your backyard. There are opportunities all around you to stop and serve the God of Heaven. Maybe go on a mission trip? Serve at a soup kitchen? Donate goods to a women’s shelter? Seek out how you can serve and take that first step outside of your comfort zone to bless another. It’ll change your perspective. It’ll change your life.

Don’t forget to comment on this post and leave your thanks to be registered for the “Kisses from Katie” giveaway!

Blessings!

Kisses from Katie {giveaway}

November 21, 2011

Last night I reluctantly finished reading Kisses from Katie. A book that has single handedly changed my entire perspective on life. I did not want to finish reading because I wanted it to continue. I have never before been more thankful for blogs!

Description from Amazon:

What would cause an eighteen-year-old old senior class president and homecoming queen from Nashville, Tennessee, to disappoint her parents by forgoing college, break her little brother’s heart, lose all but a handful of her friends (because the rest of them think she has gone off the deep end), and break up with the love of her life, all so she could move to Uganda, where she knew only one person but didn’t know any of the language? A passion to make a difference. Katie Davis left over Christmas break her senior year for a short mission trip to Uganda and her life was turned completely inside out. She found herself so moved by the people and children of Uganda that she knew her calling was to return and care for them. She has given up a relatively comfortable life—at a young age—to care for the less fortunate of this world. She was so moved by the need she witnessed, she’s centered her life around meeting that need. Katie, a charismatic and articulate young woman, is in the process of adopting thirteen children in Uganda, and she completely trusts God for daily provision for her and her family.Despite the rough conditions in which Katie lives, she has found a life of service to God to be one of great joy. Katie’s children bring constant delight and help her help others by welcoming whoever comes to their door. As the challenges grow, so does Katie’s faith and her certainty that what she’s doing in Uganda, one person at a time, will have far-reaching rewards. It isn’t the life she planned, but it is the life she loves.

To further her reach into the needs of Ugandans, Katie established Amazima Ministries. The ministry matches orphaned children with sponors worldwide. Each sponsor’s $300/year provides schooling, school supplies, three hot meals a day, minor medical care, and spiritual encouragement. Katie expected to have forty children in the program; she had signed up 150 by January 2008; today it sponsors over 400. Another aspect of the ministry is a feeding program created for the displaced Karamojong people—Uganda’s poorest citizens. The program feeds lunch to over 1,200 children Monday-Friday and sends them home with a plate of food; it also offers basic medical care, Bible study, and general health training.

Katie Davis is more than fascinating, she’s inspiring, as she has wholeheartedly answered the call to serve.

Before I had even finished reading the book I asked my dear husband for one thing for Christmas. Necklaces made by the women in the impoverished city of Masese that are sold so they can provide for themselves and their families. When they arrived in the mail I squealed in delight. Yes. Squealed!

And today I’d like to bless two people! One will receive the book Kisses from Katie and the other will receive a necklace from the wonderful women of Amazima!

{Keep it for yourself of give as a gift? Spread the good news of what Katie is doing!}

All you need to do is comment in the rarely opened comment section and tell what you are thankful for. You can enter a second comment for sharing on Facebook and a third comment for sharing on Twitter. But the catch is that you have to mention in the comment section below where you shared it AND add something else you are thankful for. So you can enter up to three times. You have until Thursday night and on Friday we’ll draw two winners. I look forward to hearing your eucharisteos!

Blessings!

Make it Personal

November 7, 2011

As we draw closer to the holidays we search for ways to give. To serve others. To help those in need. One program we’ve always participated in is Operation Christmas Child. Churches and businesses usually have drop off centers. So this year I began printing off our labels that we affix to the shoe boxes that are filled with all sorts of goodies for those in need. As I removed the labels from our printer I was hit with the realization that we already have children that are in need. You see, every time we add a new member to our family we add a new child to sponsor. And I am ashamed to say that we have never once written these children. We got our first child nine and a half years ago. Needless to say he has aged out of the program since then. But there is no excuse for us not reaching out to the rest of these sweet children. And so we finally did. It is never too late, right?

We packed up our children and headed to Target. With a list in hand we sought to buy things that the children ‘needed’. Colored pencils, hair ties, paper, stickers for fun, etc.

The children set out each envelope and filled them appropriately. I then wrote a letter to each one and addressed the packages.

How I wish we could see the look on their faces when they get their personalized mail bags! And how badly I want to apologize for taking so selfishly long to connect.

We have learned how important it is to give these children hope. To let them know they are being lifted up in prayer. Thank you, Lord, for this opportunity to serve You.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
{James 1:27 ESV}

Edited: Since this post was written we have added one more child to sponsor. We decided to go through Food for the Hungry and we’re all very excited to write a letter to our sweet little girl in Uganda and send her a care package as well! Here is a photo of some of the family making that difficult decision of who to sponsor.

Blessings!
