A New Way to Read the Bible

A while back I posted my favorite Bible reading system. There’s even a download on there that I re-created. And at that time in my life I truly did benefit from reading through the Bible in that way. It was the first time I had read through the entire Bible. It did take more than a year {I was new to this mothering gig}, but I loved checking off the parts I had read.

Just recently I came across a new way to read through the Bible and I love it! This isn’t for those on a tight time schedule, but at the same time it kind of is. Now that I have older kids we’ve figured out how we can all read together and make it part of our daily routine. As it should be, of course, but we get to read the Bible together now and it’s not just me waking up at the crack of dawn and hiding away. I still get my large cup of coffee, though.

It’s called Professor Grant Horner’s Bible Reading System.

What you do is read ten chapters a day from the Bible. Not in order, you skip around. For example, the first day you’ll read chapter one from the books: Matthew, Genesis, Romans, I Thessalonians, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Joshua, Isaiah and Acts. The second day you’ll read chapter two from each of those books. Not every book of the Bible has the same amount of chapters so you’ll finish I Thess. and be into II Thess. before you’re anywhere near completing Psalms. You will never read all ten chapters in the same order because you’ll have 66 gears of different sizes rotating and switching off at different times. Make sense?

What my kids and I love the most is that you end up reading something in one book that totally relates to something in another book that you may not have ever seen the relation between had you not read them back to back!

You’re encouraged to not dig deep. Just read and move on. It is a lot of reading. In all honesty it probably takes us about an hour or so to read each day. Personally, we love it. Definitely the best part of the day and a huge homeschooling bonus.

Another bonus? I was happily surprised to find it’s one of the reading programs on the Bible app YouVersion. That keeps us from littering our Bibles with ten scrappy bookmarks that can easily get taken out by curious toddlers.

So to boil it down: if you’re not reading your Bible you should be. Download or print off the Grant Horner Bible Reading System. Try it for a month and enjoy His Word in ways you didn’t think you could. Annnnnnd, you’re welcome.
