Friendships When You Struggle

Friendships When You Struggle - Eucharisteo.com

This past year, which I am now naming “The Struggle,” was survivable because of the love and support of a thoughtful handful of friends. There were so many times that I would cry before them or over the phone. When I would lay my broken heart before them. They were there and they stayed there. They didn’t turn away because this was too heavy for them. So this is where I want to thank them. Though a small blog post hardly does them justice.

We all have our struggles. And we shouldn’t struggle alone. I remember, years ago, I called a dear friend and her husband answered the phone. He then proceeded to tell me that I should start asking my friend how she is doing and not just talk about myself.

Wow. That was a much needed smack in the face.

The problem was, she was a great listener and not so much a talker. So take note during your conversations. Make sure you’re not hogging the time your two share. I understand you have a story to tell, and that’s beautiful, but your friend does as well. And she may be trying to save you the trouble of hearing her struggles.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. (Romans 12:15-16 ESV)

I can not even begin to tell you how thankful I am for my friends this past year. They showed me concern, compassion, encouragement and they would bring me back to the Bible. Their prayers were priceless. And they didn’t try to offer a quick fix. They knew that just listening would be enough for my heart. Just to know there was somebody who cared for my soul.

How many souls have you sacrificed time for to minister to? Or is this a time where your soul needs ministered to? Trust your friends and allow them the gift of being able to bless you.

To my friends who ministered to me this past year, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, you showed me Christ and laid down your time for me and I am humbled by your love. Thank you. I pray that Yahweh will allow me to minister to others like you showed to me.

Blessings!
